Miniature art includes paintings, engravings and sculptures that are very small-scale; it has a long history that dates back to prehistory. The portrait miniature is the most common class in recent centuries, and from ancient times, engraved gems, oftentimes used as impression seals, and cylinder seals in various materials were very of import. For example almost surviving examples of figurative fine art from the Indus Valley Civilization and in Minoan fine art are very modest seals. Gothic boxwood miniatures are very pocket-sized carvings in woods, used for rosary beads and the like.

Western paintings in illuminated manuscripts are known equally miniatures, even if not very minor - this sense of the discussion in fact has a different derivation, from a Latin discussion for a ruby-red paint. Miniature Art Societies hold almanac shows around the world. The Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington, DC, is the oldest miniature art guild in the The states. The Miniature Art Social club of Florida is possibly i of the largest miniature fine art shows in the The states. Galleries such as Seaside Fine art Gallery, The Snowgoose Gallery, and the Ciders Painters of America also hold almanac exhibitions where visitors are invited to view the paintings and sculptures under magnifying lenses.
